Daimler relies on servo-driven turner from Springer 2022

The Wenders, which were specially developed for Daimler, are currently being commissioned at Beijing Benz Automotive in China, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and the Beijing Automotive Group BBAC. Outside of Germany, BBAC is the only joint venture of Mercedes-Benz AG worldwide that produces front and rear-wheel drive as well as electric models under one roof.

Stuhr, 19.01.2022 - The servo-driven turner developed for Daimler by Springer, the specialist for press shop and body-in-white automation, is used in the production of tailgates. An intelligent solution was required here, as the rotation cannot be performed by a robot as is normally the case. The complex turner specially developed by Springer for this purpose consists of a modular design.

"We are delighted that we can once again demonstrate the intelligent solutions we can develop and implement with the turner. This is not just about tooling, but about engineering, which is increasingly in demand from manufacturers," says Uwe Springer, Managing Director of Springer GmbH.

In the case of the solution for Daimler, two internal servo-driven swivel arms, each equipped with four pairs of pneumatic clamping grippers, are used to rotate components by 180° in the forward and return stroke. The entire system is currently designed for a cycle time of 15 components per minute. This also includes the process time required for the robot-supported feeding and removal of the component. Servomotors from the SIMOTICS S series are used to carry out the highly dynamic and precise motion sequences and a SIMATIC S7 from Siemens is used for the process automation control tasks in conjunction with the CBF press.

Springer develops and builds special designs that go beyond pure tooling. Springer's customers include well-known car manufacturers such as Volvo, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. However, Springer's solutions are also used in other areas with similarly high requirements in automated manufacturing, such as the production of household appliances.
